Beaver Lake Renewables Begins Front-End Engineering Design

Officials with SunGas Renewables recently announced the start of front-end engineering design (FEED), marking the beginning of the final stage of development for its flagship project, Beaver Lake Renewable Energy near Pineville, La. that will produce “green” methanol using forest and sawmill residuals. The FEED engineering will be performed by Kiewit Engineering Group and Jacobs based on process technology systems. SunGas is providing biogenic syngas and CO2 production capacity using three S1000 gasification modules; Johnson Matthey is supplying methanol synthesis technology and catalysts, Linde Engineering is supplying its rectisol wash unit for acid gas removal; and Merichem Technologies is providing its LO-CAT sulfur recovery technology.

Partnering with SunGas Renewables on the project is C2X, which will operate the plant when it’s completed in 2027. The facility is slated to produce up to 500,000 tons of green methanol that’s a key component in marine-grade diesel fuel. In fact, shipping giant Maersk is a minority owner in Beaver Lake Renewables and its fleet of oceangoing vessels is going to be a major customer, according to project officials. The facility will also offer an extensive carbon capture and credit system for residual CO2.
