Hawaii’s High Technology Development Corp. has sponsored a demonstration of a $6.8 million Air Force investment in a renewable and clean, waste-to-energy generating system.

The waste-to-energy project demonstration will show how 10 tons of waste per day can be converted to electricity through gasification technology. Applications of the Turnw2e, Waste-To-Energy Gasification system include solid waste, animal and crop wastes, cellulosic biomass, tires, non-recyclable plastics, and industrial waste.

The system was installed at the end of last year and finished initial testing this month. For the next few weeks it will run specific programs to collect data that would be equivalent for a 2,000 person military base. After more testing, the system will be used to produce a liquid jet fuel from waste. The Air Force plans to include a gasifier in the first-phase of a micro-grid project by the end of this year. The Air Force Research Labs selected a Hawaii group to test the viability of the energy.

“The Air Force’s effort to develop a microgrid testbed in Hawaii will help ensure that the Air National Guard has access to the energy it needs to execute its defense and homeland security missions, while providing a proof of concept that clean energy and microgrid technologies can support the Air Force’s broader energy security goals,” said Sen. Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii.

The demonstration runs through this summer at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickham. The system was created by a woman-owned engineering company, Biomass Energy Systems Inc.
