JaxPort will take a shot at winning a $24 million federal grant that would help one of the port’s major tenants become an exporter of wood pellets, officials said Monday.

JaxPort has been trying for years to get a foothold in the shipping of wood pellets, which are a growing source of energy in Europe as a substitute for using coal in electric generating plants. To create wood pellets, a manufacturing process removes moisture from wood so it’s easier to transport the pellets in ships and then burn the wood products as a power source.

JaxPort is applying for a TIGER grant, which stands for Transportation Investment Growing Economic Recovery. The U.S. Department of Transportation awards the TIGER grants, which are highly competitive. The department will award $500 million this year.

JaxPort CEO Brian Taylor said the ability to boost the nation’s export economy is a strong point for federal involvement in the project. In addition, Diversified Holdings, which is a tenant for the port at Talleyrand, plans to invest its own money into Talleyrand upgrades, such as work on the railroad lines, to handle the shipment of wood pellets.
