Japanese conglomerate Sumitomo Corp. is building a $208 million (JPY 25 billion) 50MW wood biomass power plant in Sakata City, Yamagata, Japan. The facility is planned for the Sakata Rinkai Industrial Park adjacent the Port of Sakata and is expected to contribute to Sumitomo’s Summit Energy electric power retail business.

Summit Sakata Power, a subsidiary of Summit Energy, will operate the facility. Construction work is scheduled to begin June 2016, with startup planned for spring 2018. Sumitomo’s Materials, Supplies & Real Estate Div. is responsible for the supply of biomass fuels, which will be sourced locally and from overseas sources. The Sakata facility is Summit Energy’s third biomass power plant, with one in operation since 2005 and another scheduled to start up in 2017.

Summit Energy’s biomass power plants serve both industrial and household customers.
