Delaware’s congressional delegation Monday announced a $12 million federal grant for energy research at University of Delaware in Newark.

The grant from the U.S. Department of Energy will go to UD’s Catalysis Center for Energy Innovation, intended to speed scientific breakthroughs for the 21st century energy economy, Sen. Tom Carper, Sen. Chris Coons and Rep. John Carney said in a joint statement Monday.

Professor Dionisios Vlachos, the center director, said the four-year funding will let researchers build on work “further catalytic technologies” that can transform widely abundant plant biomass into renewable chemicals and fuels.” Vlachos said the research could have “a major impact on the economy and the environment.”

Carper said the funds “will help drive innovation and carry our country toward an energy future that grows our economy and protects our environment.” While the center already made “significant contributions to energy innovations that have the potential to power our state and our country,” he called the funds “a shot in the arm that enables the center to make even more progress even faster.”

UD was one of 32 “Energy Frontier Research Centers” nationwide to share $100 million in such grants. The UD center will use the award “to continue its efforts to discover catalytic technologies to transform widely abundant plant biomass into renewable fuels and chemicals,” they said. The chemicals would replace petroleum-based ones in products such as plastic bottles, clothes and food packaging, they said.
