RWE Innogy initiated a sales process for the Georgia Biomass pellet plant in Waycross, Georgia about four weeks ago. Information as to the recent status quo of the sales efforts has not been supplied.

The planned divestiture is, by the company’s own account, associated with the altered strategy of RWE Innogy, whereupon the business with biomass plants is not part of the core business anymore. Georgia Biomass was put into operation in mid-May 2011. With a capacity of around 750,000 tons/year, it is still today’s largest operating pellet plant in the U.S.

Originally, the pellets produced in Waycross were to be used as co-firing fuel in the RWE coal-fired power plants in Europe. The lion’s share of the pellet production amounting to about 660,000 tons is bound by contract until 2019.

Among the major buyers are the British energy group Drax as well as the trading company RWE Supply & Trading. The shipment of pellets to Europe is largely implemented though the port in Savannah, Georgia. It was only in October 2013 that the pellet plant was certified in accordance with ENplus standard.
