Sundrop Fuels, a Colorado-based advanced biofuels company, has awarded a contract to engineering and construction services firm IHI E&C International to develop a $500m combined commercial biofuel production and technology demonstration plant in Boyce, Louisiana.

Located one mile west of Alexandria, the facility is estimated to produce 60 million gallons of finished gasoline from natural gas per annum. The success of the plant will validate Sundrop’s proprietary technology of producing green gasoline from woody biomass.

Sundrop Fuels chief executive officer Wayne Simmons said that with IHI E&C’s expertise and resources, the company is keen to proceed with the project, which is expected to make Sundrop a major affordable, drop-in biofuel producer.

The success of Boyce facility will help the company’s plan to launch a series of renewable gasoline megaplants, each of which is expected to produce more than 200 million gallons of cellulosic biofuel annually.

Sundrop Fuels hopes to have four such facilities in operation with a combined production capacity of more than one billion gallons, a major chunk of the total cellulosic advanced biofuels goal set by the nation’s Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS).
