Biomass group Kedco has signed heads of agreement for a new 25 megawatt biomass plant in Londonderry, Northern Ireland.

The agreement with the Londonderry Port & Harbour Commissioners gives Kedco an option to lease a 10-acre site within Londonderry Dock for a biomass electricity and heat generating plant.

The port already hosts the 400MW ESB Coolkeeragh gas fired power plant, while another biomass project on the site has also received planning permission.

Kedco expects to sign a binding option agreement before the end of March 2013, following which the planning process will start.

Elsewhere, Kedco added it has now started the pre-planning consultation process to double capacity at its Newry biomass project up to 8MW.
