A vessel with nearly 20,000 tons of wood pellets was discharged at Wismar seaport for the first time this week. The port of Wismar is becoming an ever more significant place of pellets transshipment for the pellets producer German Pellets located at the site, as the company said in a press release received by Lesprom Network.

“In view of the increasing demand for wood pellets across Europe we have intensified our commercial activities,” says company spokeswoman Claudia Röhr.

German Pellets currently prepares for construction of a storage shed for wood pellets on the port territory together with Seehafen Wismar GmbH which is planned to be built in the spring of 2013.

MV Federal Elbe, a bulk carrier of the Handysize class with 7.70 m draught, is just under 200 m long and has a beam of 24 m. It was the first time that a wood pellet freighter of this size was received in Wismar. The wood pellets come from a pellet plant on the Canadian east coast and are stored temporarily in Wismar before being sold on to customers in Europe.
