Southern Co. officials have announced the company’s Southern Power unit will buy Nacogdoches Power LLC from American Renewables LLC. The biomass power generation facility in the East Texas town of Sacul is set to begin construction in late 2009 and start operations in 2012. The 165-acre project will be one of the largest biomass-fueled electric generating facilities in America, with capacity of approximately 100 MW. Its output is committed through a 20-year power purchase agreement with Austin Energy. The plant will be fueled with forest residue from the surrounding areas, wood processing residues and clean municipal wood waste and will require around 1 million tons of biomass fuel annually.
