Piney Woods Pellets near Wiggins, Miss. recently started up, aiming to produce 50,000 tons of premium grade wood fuel pellets annually. The $10 million plant covers 12,000 sq. ft. and employs 27. Owned by Osmond Crosby, a third-generation tree farmer from a family long involved in Mississippi and Louisiana forestry and industrial innovation, Piney Woods Pellets held a large startup ceremony in June with hundreds of guests, including Executive Director of the Mississippi Development Authority Gray Swoope, Mississippi President Pro Tempore state Sen. Billy Hewes, Wiggins Mayor Jerry Alexander and other regional officials.
“Piney Woods Pellets was a project we started after Hurricane Katrina devastated South Mississippi,” said Crosby. “We want this plant to be a part of South Mississippi’s recovery and at the same time provide an alternative fuel source that’s renewable, affordable and environmentally friendly. This is an important project for South Mississippi, but its positive impact on our
environment and dependency on foreign oil will be felt on a regional as well as a national scale.”
